Why Does My House Feel Humid Even with the AC Running?
Cooling your home and controlling its moisture aren't quite the same thing.

The air conditioner is running. The thermostat says 74 degrees.
So why does the house still feel clammy?
In Houston, especially during stretches of rainy weather, indoor humidity can become noticeable even when the temperature inside the house seems perfectly comfortable.
That's because air conditioning has two jobs during our long cooling season. It lowers the temperature, but it also removes moisture from the air.
Those two things don't always happen at the same rate.
An air-conditioning system removes moisture as warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil. The longer the system runs, the more opportunity it has to pull moisture from that air.
But certain conditions can interfere with that process.
During rainy weather, for example, outdoor temperatures may drop while humidity remains extremely high. The house may not need as much cooling, so the air conditioner runs for shorter periods. The thermostat is satisfied, but the indoor air may still contain more moisture than usual.
Moisture can also enter the home from other sources.
Air leaks around doors, windows, attic penetrations, and other openings can allow humid outdoor air inside. Everyday activities such as cooking, showering, and doing laundry add moisture as well. Plumbing leaks or water intrusion through the building envelope can contribute additional moisture that the cooling system then has to manage.
That doesn't mean a humid-feeling house automatically has a serious environmental problem.
What matters is whether the condition is temporary or persistent.
A particularly wet week may affect indoor humidity throughout Houston. But if your house regularly feels damp, condensation begins appearing where it didn't before, or certain rooms consistently seem more humid than others, it's worth finding out why.
A simple indoor humidity monitor can provide useful information. Rather than relying entirely on how the air feels, you can watch what happens over several days and compare different areas of the house.
Patterns are often more useful than a single reading.
Persistent excess moisture can affect comfort, building materials, and the indoor environment. It can also create conditions that are more favorable for microbial growth.
The goal isn't to assume the worst.
It's to understand where the moisture is coming from.
Houston humidity is unavoidable outside. When it starts becoming a regular feature inside your home, that's when it's worth paying attention.
